Health & Nutrition
Most of the rural poor, especially children and women are malnourished and the affordability and access of nutritious food, and health facilities are big challenge. Many poor pregnant women and children in Ghana don’t get even minimum required nutrition. Pre-natal and post-natal medical complicacies are very common. Infant mortality rate and number of underweight children are quite high.
At Markaz, with our limited source of funding we try to improve the health and nutrition condition of these disadvantaged poor, especially children and mothers, through below activities
First Aid
At the beginning of every academic year assisted schools are provided with first aid materials and stocks are replenished as and when they become exhausted. Teachers are educated about the application of first aid kit.

Health Assessment
With the assistance of nurses from the Ministry of Health we conduct periodic (at least twice a year) health assessment on school children to establish their health problems and administer on the spot treatment or refer cases to the hospital. During such assessments children are de-wormed and given multivitamin supplements, and parents and teachers are given basic health and nutrition education.
Feeding Program
Results of the assessment over the years pointed to the need for a school based feeding program to address malnutrition and other problems affecting school children. The feeding program currently covers a total of 1,600 children in three (3) school complexes; Kanvilli R/C, Tuunaayili M/A and St. Augustine’s in Nyanshegu. Children in these schools take a hot lunch 5 days a week for the academic term/year. (later we have to add Gushegu details also)
